A world-class drone pilot takes on a world-class rally driver in this cat-and-mouse challenge cooked up by DJI and Jaguar
Can a DJI drone keep up with a Jaguar XJ in a run around a tough racecourse? The two firms appear to have agreed that there’s only one way to find out.
With award-winning stunt driver Mark Higgins behind the wheel of the Jaguar, and world champion pilot Jaehong Li at the controls of the drone, Jaguar and DJI have headed to the Zhuhai International Circuit to put together the cat and mouse drone challenge.
The video follows the pair as the car attempts to outrun the drone through a twisting and turning racecourse, with the skills of the two operators being tested to their limits. It’s a pretty exciting watch and well worth taking a couple of minutes to see the action.
While the video is a lot of fun, it also demonstrates how potentially useful drones could be in filming action scenes and car chases, as the Phantom Inspire 1 effortlessly captures footage from angles that would be a major headache for a regular film crew.
It manages this with the stabilised Zenmuse X5 camera, which produces some astonishingly smooth footage even while the drone is being majorly put through its paces.
The film industry at large has been picking up on this too, as we saw in our recent in-depth look at how drones have been steadily infiltrating your favourite films and TV shows, including Game of Thrones and others.
DJI also released a behind-the-scenes video for the challenge, showing off a little more about how they put it all together. Interestingly, they actually used another DJI Inspire 1 to get the shots they wanted of the DJI Inspire 1 that was in the race. Droneception! Watch below:
