New FDR-X3000R includes Balanced Optical SteadyShot technology and 4K UHD shooting
If you like to shoot video ‘on the go’ the newly announced Sony FDR-X3000R Action Cam shoots 4K (3840×2160) footage and incorporates a raft of technologies and features for action filmmaking.
Probably the key technology contained within the camera is its Balanced Optical SteadyShot (aka B.O.SS) image stabilisation, which is said to operate even when the camera is shooting in 4K or high speed recording modes. It was previously only seen in the Sony Handycam range and should allow you to carry on shooting without worrying about stabilising the camera or any camera shake.
Alpha-series processor included
At the heart of the camera is a new 1/2.5 type, 8.2 Megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor that’s said to have “big pixels” and is designed for video with the 16:9 aspect ratio. It works in tandem with an optimised version of the BIONZ X processor, previously seen in Sony’s Alpha cameras, to enable full pixel readout without pixel binning to help to give truer colours and reduced ‘jaggie’ effects.
You can record in 4K at 100Mbps, Full HD at 50Mbps in the XAVC S format and Full HD at 100p for shooting slow-mo action. As well as 4K video there’s the option to capture approx. 8.3 Megapixel interval recording shots for 4K time-lapse videos. Other options include Loop Recording, Live Streaming via the Ustream platform, Burst Shooting and the ability to manually adjust white balance and auto exposure shift. Editing can be done with the free Action Cam Movie Creator PC software.
A built-in tripod socket gives the flexibility to attach to a variety of accessories without needing an adaptor or housing. All of the terminals have been placed on the back of the camera to help access to the HDMI socket, the Micro USB or the microphone jack, even when attaching the camera to any of the Action Cam accessories.
The FDR-X3000R will come with Sony’s latest Live-View Remote – approx. 30% smaller than its predecessor – which can be attached to mount accessories such as the optional Handlebar Mount (VCT-HM2) using the supplied mount adaptor. This may also be worn like a wristband or attached to various optional accessories such as Shooting Grip (VCT-STG1) or the new Finger Grip (AKA-FGP1) which allows for one-handed monitoring and operation of the camera with Live-View Remote and tilts up to approx. 120 degrees for low and high angle shooting.
The remote unit controls shooting settings including power on/off and start/stop recording and the camera can also be controlled Users via smartphones and tablets by using Sony’s free PlayMemories Mobil app.
The FDR-X3000R has a splash proof body and will be supplied with a fully waterproof Underwater Housing (MPK-UWH1), effective down to 60 metres. New Action Cam accessories include the AKA-MCP1 MC Protector has an advanced AR coating and is also water and oil repellent – it adds an extra layer of protection for the camera’s lens, protecting it from dirt, dust and scratches.
