Sony is looking in to the black sunspot issue that has affected some cameras and says it will release a firmware update in due course

Sony has acknowledged the black sunspot issue that appears to be affecting Sony A7S II cameras when shooting at 25fps. The fault causes bright point sources of light, such as the sun, to peak to black, rather than white.

‘We have confirmed this phenomenon and are now analyzing it to develop a firmware solution to solve it. We will be in touch as soon as we are ready to confirm timings for this update’

The phenomenon seems to have been first observed by Andrew Reid owner of the EOSHD website. We were also able to replicate the effect using the LED light of a smartphone, though we found that the bright spot bled to magenta rather than black.
