Sony has created a world’s first with an amazing 48K 360 video, filmed at the top of Les Deux Alpes in France, using 12 Xperia Z5 Compact smartphones
What do you get when you combine 12 Sony Xperia Z5 Compacts and have them each film in 4K?
Answer: a unique 360° video in crisp and beautiful detail. Not funny, but accurate, and also entirely true as the firm has recently headed up a mountain to do exactly that.
Using a custom 3D-printed rig, Sony captured some jaw-dropping scenes from the slopes of Les Deux Alpes during the Rise Ski & Snowboard Festival, with each of the 12 phones contributing 4K footage to make for a single 48K video with a moveable viewpoint.
Watch the video below, and use your mouse or the touchscreen on your phone to move the perspective around and watch some spectacular winter sportspeople at work, as well as taking in that view. It’s like being there, but less cold, so win-win frankly.
The Xperia Z5 compact is a smartphone designed to be light and compact, with a fast autofocus that makes its camera a compelling proposition for smartphone snappers. The Xperia Z5 have been notable as the world’s first 4K smartphones
The video is also currently premiering at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, where viewers could also get a glimpse of the complex rig Sony hooked the phones into.
Sony posted a blog about the experience, which you can read here.
