Sony has announced two new full-frame E-mount lenses in the shape of the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM large aperture wide-angle zoom (aka model SEL1635GM) and the FE 12-24mm F4 G ultra wide-angle zoom (aka model SEL1224G), which will be available during July and August 2017 respectively.

The news will be welcomed by Sony full-frame shooters using cameras such as the a9, a99 II and the Alpha 7-series and the ultra wide-angle zoom has the potential to appeal to vloggers who want to include themselves in a wide-angle frame, either on-set or on location.

The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM zoom
The new FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM zoom joins the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM and FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS in Sony’s F2.8 large aperture G Master zoom lens line-up. Equipped with a variety of Sony’s most advanced lens technologies, it is the first wide-angle G Master model, making it ideal for an extensive variety of shooting situations. It is said to be ‘exceptionally lightweight and compact’ for easy carrying and use.

The lens is said to feature ‘exceptional corner-to-corner sharpness’ and has an optical design that includes five aspherical elements. Two of these elements are Sony’s original extreme aspherical (XA) elements that reduce aberration and deliver ‘ultimate resolution’ throughout the entire zoom range and aperture range.

The front XA element on the 16-35mm optic is the largest XA element ever produced, ensuring optimum quality. There are also two Extra low-Dispersion (ED) glass elements that help to keep chromatic aberration to a minimum while maximising resolution and Sony’s original Nano AR coating suppresses internal reflections to ensure ‘excellent image contrast and clarity’.

The lens features a near circular aperture shape at all settings, and the combination of the large XA element with an 11-blade aperture design produces images with sharply focused subjects and beautiful bokeh. It also has two DDSSMs (Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motors) that compose a floating focusing system and ensure that AF acquisition is speedy and quiet, making it a good choice for shooting movies or still images.

The 16-35mm is dust and moisture resistant and has a fluorine coating on the front lens that helps to both prevent dust or grease marks and remove them easily if they do become a trouble. There is also a customisable focus hold button and a hood release button.

The FE 12-24mm F4 G
A uniquely designed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, the new FE 12-24mm F4 G lens produces outstanding image quality in a compact, lightweight design, weighing approx. 566g. Now Sony’s widest full-frame E-mount lens, it offers a dynamic perspective for landscape, architecture and interior shooting, as well as for vlogging on location.

The lens has an optical design with four aspherical elements that ensure ‘excellent corner to corner sharpness and resolution’. It also has three ED glass elements and one Super ED glass element that minimises chromatic aberration throughout the entire image and benefits from Sony’s original Nano AR coating.

The new 12-24mm lens includes a DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor) for fast, quiet and precise AF performance, plus a customisable focus hold button and focus mode switch. It is also dust and moisture resistant.

G Master range
The arrival of the 16-35mm wide-angle zoom brings Sony’s flagship G Master lens series up to a total of six optics and comes just a month after the launch of the Sony FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM OSS G Master zoom lens.

In addition, the G Master lenses are ‘future-proofed’ as at the March 2016 press launch of the G Master lens series Sony clearly suggested that the G Master lenses will have a resolution that’s high enough to cope with shooting high res video, potentially right up to 8K.

The addition of the ultra wide-angle 12-24mm zoom means that the focal length range of Sony’s full-frame E-mount lens line-up now goes from the ultra-wide 12mm length up to the super-telephoto 800mm (with the use of a Sony 2.0x teleconverter).

Pricing and availability
The 12-24mm zoom will start shipping in Europe from July 2017 with a price of approximately €2000 with the 16-35mm set to arrive in August 2017 at approximately €2700. To discover more about the Sony range of G Master lenses just click here.
