We've already used the new Sony GM lenses. Watch our behind the scenes video shot using the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM and Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lenses, with an A7R II.
Sony announced the new full frame E-mount GM line of lenses last month. This new premium line of lenses for the Sony A7 series follows on from a number of brands that are now pushing a high-end lens line-up that rivals the quality of the very best lenses available. In fact the new lens technology that Sony is employing should guarnatee that the lenses will be suitable for shooting 8K video when that become mainstream in the next few years.
A total of three leneses were announced, a FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, a FE 70-20mm f/2.8 GM and an FE 85mm f/1.4 GM. Of the three lenses, the 24-70mm and the 85mm f/1.4 lenses are now becoming available, whilst the 70-200mm lens will follow shortly.
We have been fortunate enough to be amongst the first people in the world to try out the new lenses, and we recnetly used them to shoot a quick behind the scenes video whilst we were shooting a series of portraits for a feature in Amateur Photographer Magazine.
Our initial impressions of the lenses is that they are excellent. The 85mm in particular is staggeringly good, and it looks set to rival the recent Sony FE 90mm macro lens for sharpness, but we will wait for the AP lab test to confirm this.
Whilst a number of people have commented on the size of the lenses in comparision to the small body of teh camera, we don’t see this is a problem. When you think about how the lenses will work when paired with a Sony A7R II you will struggle to find a combination that offers as much detail and resolution, and it is certainly smaller and lighter than an equivalent DSLR pairing.
And here is a quick reminder of the initial footage that we shot whilst briefly testing the lenses at the Sony press launch. You can read more about the lenses and the new features here – http://www.thevideomode.com/news/sony-8k-video-lenses-2062/
