Canon reveals filmmakers can pay to update 4K DSLR's capabilities with Canon Log
For filmmakers who want more dynamic range in their original footage and easier colour grading in post-production Canon has announced a chargeable upgrade of its EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR, which means you can add Canon Log (C-Log) to the spec of the 4K camera.
Long since a key feature in the Canon Cinema EOS System, C-Log is designed to deliver an 800% increase in dynamic range, hence minimising the loss of detail in the darkest and brightest parts of the image. Canon has advised that When using C-Log on the EOS 5D Mark IV an ISO setting of 400 will deliver the largest dynamic range of 12 stops – very useful when shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
Canon explained, “With this upgrade, the EOS 5D Mark IV can achieve a cinematic look similar to what can be achieved using Cinema EOS cameras, allowing it to serve as a second camera on a Cinema EOS shoot or to stand alone as a cinema camera.”
C-Log alters the image processing data after the image has been captured so videographers should find it easy to colour match with footage shot on other cameras, including the Canon Cinema EOS cameras. The footage from any camera can be combined and colour matched in a single colour grading process, which provides a final global colour and seamless feel, regardless of whether the footage is shot on different cameras.
As well as colour matching C-Log also reduces noise, particularly in shadow areas that can appear during colour grading. The new C-Log upgrade makes the colour grading of footage more flexible via the production of accurate colours with minor colour bias.
How to get the upgrade
Canon USA has said that a later version of the EOS 5D Mark IV is on its way with C-Log already installed. However, if you want C-Log sooner the 5D Mark IV update will be available as a chargeable upgrade exclusively via Canon authorised service centres. Please note: The Video Mode understands that this upgrade will not become available until June 2017 at the earliest.
