Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi has carved out a niche as the cheaper alternative to GoPro, but the latest YI 4K Action Camera 2 could be even better than the GoProHero 4 cameras

If you’re hesitating before stumping up the cash for a GoPro Hero4 Silver or Black edition then you’ll want to check this out – the Xiaomi YI 4K Action Camera 2,

Building on the original YI action camera, this new version adds features that are also present on the GoPro Hero4 cameras, such as 4K movie recording.

Also able to capture 12MP photos, the YI 2 has on its front a seven-element lens with an f/2.8 aperture, and on its rear a 2.19-inch LCD display with touchscreen functionality, 640 x 360-pixel resolution. The camera features in-body distortion correction for the lens.

Its built-in 1400mAh battery offers, according to Xiaomi, up to 120 minutes of recording time in 4K at 30fps. There’s also built-in Wi-fi connectivity, as well as Bluetooth.

A dual microphone is included to improve sound quality, while the camera also offers three-second startup for quick reactions. Six-axis anti-shake also helps keep shots stable and smooth, and there’s an option to have the frame rate change automatically according to the light conditions.

There are a few handy picture and video modes as well, including a self-timer, time-lapse video, slow-motion (exact frame rate is as yet unspecified)

This version is a little wider than the last but still noticeably smaller than any Hero 4 camera – its full dimensions are 2.36 x 0.83 x 1.65 inches.

Official details of the products availibility in the UK are non-existent , but it is currently up for pre-order in the US at GearBest for $249.99 (£171). Considering that a GoPro Hero 4 Black can still go for £399 these days, it’s well worth considering.

The Xiaomi YI 4K Action Camera 2 is available in black, white or a very fetching rose gold.
